Cincinnati Geothermal Tips: Benefits of Geothermal vs. Traditional Heating Systems

Benefits of Geothermal

The benefits of geothermal heating systems over traditional heating systems are several beginning with its much higher efficiency rating. Geothermal heating delivers a 400% efficiency rating. This means that 4 units of energy are delivered for every unit of electrical energy. The maximum efficiency rating a gas furnace can obtain is 94%, which means that 6% of the fuel goes out the flue, but this gas furnace is still using much more energy. However, geothermal systems are transferring heat whereas traditional heating is burning something. Not only does the geothermal system lower the heating bill by as much as 70%, but it also creates a more efficient comfort system.

The EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy state that the geothermal heating system is the most environmentally friendly method to heat a home. Creating geothermal energy does not emit carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or any other greenhouse gasses that contribute to a reduction in air quality. Geothermal systems use very little electricity, so they help reduce peak demand on the power grids. This in turn, contributes to a reduction in the emissions from coal-fired electricity plants. The EPA estimates that a geothermal system for a 2,500 square foot home will save 9 tons of coal a year.

Safety of the home’s occupants is another benefit of geothermal heating, which does not create combustion. Thus, there is no chance of the deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Traditional heating systems can generate the slow release of carbon monoxide, which will result in a slow and unnoticed carbon monoxide poisoning.

Geothermal heating systems are quiet since they function with fewer noisy parts. The system is very reliable with a 25+ year life span while the traditional furnace will last between 7 and 10 years. The maintenance costs of a gas furnace will be much higher than on a geothermal system. The ground loop system which, all geothermal systems have, is guaranteed for 50 years.

Looking at a bigger picture than just individual home use, every 100,000 geothermal units with an estimated lifespan of 20 years, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1.1 million metric tons of carbon equivalents and save homeowners about $500 million in heating and cooling costs.
