Heating in Cincinnati: How’s Your Insulation?

Here in Cincinnati and the greater Tri-State area, having proper attic and basement insulation is necessary. Without it, homes are not only expensive to keep warm, but quite possibly unlivable when the winter bone-chill really kicks into high gear.

Free Heating Consultations

At Pinnacle Air Solutions, we offer free consultations about your home heating, so just give us a call if you would like us to come over and see how well your home is prepared for the winter.

While we don’t recommend it based on safety issues, if you would like to check on your own, though, we have some general information below. *If you do decide to look yourself, Pinnacle Air Solutions is not responsible for any injuries or damage that may occur. We recommend you have a professional do this investigation for you.

Checking Home Insulation

You will want to have:

  • a headlight or head lamp to keep your hands available
  • a hard hat to protect yourself from those sharp roofing nails
  • a tape measure
  • safety glasses
  • gloves
  • face protection, either a dust mask or some other covering for your nose and mouth
  • boards to lay across joists to walk on

You will be walking in your attic, so be sure to stay on the truss chords and joists. If you walk or crawl directly on insulation or drywall, you could fall through the ceiling and seriously injure yourself. (Again, you can request that we come over to do this for you.)

Keep a lookout for ceiling nails, either coming up from the floor like stalagmites or down from the ceiling like stalagtites. Attics tend to have a lot of exposed nails, so step with caution, and move carefully with the assistance of strong lights.

EnergyStar recommends that Cincinnati attics have R49 to R60 added in uninsulated attics, R38 to R49 in attics with 3”-4” of existing insulation. For uninsulated basements and crawlspaces, they recommend R25 to R30.
