Many Cincinnatians continue to use natural gas (propane) or oil furnaces. There are a variety of reasons for this, but primarily it is cost. There is a persistent belief that electric furnaces are more expensive, and there are valid reasons for this belief. But while electricity is pricier than gas per unit, an electric furnace may actually save you energy costs in the long run.
Here are a few reasons why homeowners are considering furnace replacement and going electric:
- Electric furnaces, when they are maintained properly, are more efficient than natural gas furnaces. And while electricity costs more per energy unit than gas or oil – at least for now – that added efficiency balances it out by requiring you to use fewer energy units.
- Electric furnaces are safer than traditional oil or gas furnaces. There are never gas or oil leaks, of course. There are never any carbon monoxide leaks. And since there is no lit pilot light, there is much less of a chance of a fire starting.
- The furnace itself is usually less expensive when it is electric. So, if you are needing to replace yours, you may save some money on the initial purchase.
- You can connect your solar panels to an electric furnace. You cannot do this with an oil or a gas furnace. So, if you have photovoltaic panels or are considering getting some, an electric furnace can accept that energy directly. That installation, connecting the solar panels to your electric furnace, is not difficult at all.
